Black Book - Texas Hill Country BBQ

August 2, 2011 by Eric Weidl

I don't know about you, but I love BBQ (aka, Bar B Que or Barbecue). One of the things I enjoy about BBQ is the regional differences. The BBQ in Texas is different than BBQ in Memphis, Kansas City, North Carolina. You are almost certain to start a lively conversation in any BBQ restaurant by asking how their BBQ is different than that from another state. The restaurants, food, and conversations are a great way to connect with people across this country.

Whenever I travel, I spend some time checking online to see if there are any BBQ restaurants in the area and try to visit them. I have an upcoming trip to the Texas Hill Country (the central part of the state) and started doing some Google searches. I quickly found a great article from Texas Monthly magazine with their list of the Top 50 BBQ restaurants in Texas. Jackpot!

Their list includes restaurants from the entire state. I narrowed the list down to the ones in the Hill Country area. They are:

  • Bertram Bar B Que, Bertram, TX
  • Buzzie's Bar-B-Que, Kerrville, TX
  • City Market, Luling, TX
  • City Meat Market, Giddings, TX
  • Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, Llano, TX
  • Cowpokes Texas Style Bar-B-Que, Pearsall, TX
  • Kreuz Market, Lockhart, TX
  • Lamberts Downtown Barbecue, Austin, TX
  • Louie Mueller Barbecue, Taylor, TX
  • Mann's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que, Austin, TX
  • Opie's BBQ, Spicewood, TX
  • Schoepf's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, Belton, TX
  • Snow's BBQ, Lexington, TX
  • The Smokehouse, San Antonio, TX

I've added these restaurants to our Restaurant Black Book.
