Don't Name Your Links “Click Here”

May 8, 2010 by Eric Weidl

If you are interested in attracting and maintaining viewers at your site, you need to think about how you name the links on your site. ... for two reasons.

First, the names of your links affect the readability of your site and content. Skim the two example paragraphs below.

Do This...   Not This...
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, two farmers, in a one-room log cabin on the 348-acre Sinking Spring Farm, in southeast Hardin County, Kentucky, making him the first president born in the west. His ancestor Samuel Lincoln had arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts from England in the 17th century. His grandfather, also named Abraham Lincoln, had moved to Kentucky, where he owned over 5,000 acres, and was ambushed and killed by an Indian raid in 1786.   Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, to Thomas Lincoln (click here) and Nancy Hanks (click here), two farmers, in a one-room log cabin (click here) on the 348-acre Sinking Spring Farm, in southeast Hardin County, Kentucky (click here), making him the first president born in the west. In the example on the left, you should be able to quickly get a sense of the topics and keywords in the content by simply looking for the blue underlined text. The example on the right provides no such hints. All the links are simply named "click here", giving you no clue where they will take you.

Second, how you name your links has an impact on your search engine ranking. Google and other search engines use the link names to help them understand your content. In the example on the left, it's clear to the search engines where each link goes. The example on the right gives the search engines no such helpful information. The example on the left will be ranked higher than the one on the right.
